I contacted Matthew Gregory Shire's earlier this year to discuss my buying a Shire and bringing him here to Italy. I had a lovely chat with Sheila and I felt comfortable immediately that I would find my ideal horse. All I knew is that I wanted a colt/gelding.
I finally got to Cheshire in May. There, in the barn stood two horses: one being the most amazing, huge, grey , stallion , 2yr old. He took my breath away. The other a 2yr old bay gelding, who was absolutely adorable, but smaller. I liked them both !!!
Then before making a decision we looked a some mares, I wont forget the sight and the sound of around 20 black Shires thundering across the field to Matthews whistle, so after we walking across a few muddy acres , I decided, no, it had to be between the two "boys" in the barn, (sorry Matthew, and Sheila that I made you do all that walking !)
I decided on the grey, and will admit a bit nervous at buying a stallion. "Kingston" arrived in Italy this June, he is truly fantastic, calm, and has such presence, I decided to use a local horse trainer to "break " him, as he had worked with our little pony and I was so happy with the results, this trained uses methods very similar to Monty Roberts. The photograph show's him working in the outdoor school. Kingston was trained for 2 months to ride and drive, he is now home with us.
He is in fact a bit of a celebrity here, and gets many visitors.
I would not hesitate to recommend Matthew Gregory Shires. Sheila is always happy to help with advice and also it is reassuring to be able to purchase a horse from a family who has bred and sold Shires and Clydsdales for over 30 yrs. You know you are getting the best .
